New eMoney parking meters installed in US
24 Jun 2010
A new range of eMoney parking meters have been installed in a US city.
Motorists in Charleston will now be able to pay for their parking fees using a contactless smart card, reports The Post and Courier.
The SmartCards will work in all of city's 1,840 parking meters and will allow cardholders to claim a refund on any unused parking minutes.
Hernan Pena, director of the Traffic and Transportation Department, claimed the new scheme could mean attendants will not have to empty metres as frequently in the future.
She told the news provider: "We haven't gotten to the point of reducing the collection rate. But it is very convenient, and people love it."
Official are encouraging more residents to use the technology by opening up a second smart card store.
The first 100 people to purchase a card at the new vendor will get the card itself free along with 240 free parking minutes.
Around 1,100 people have bought the cards since the programme's launch in January 2009, with sales and fees revenue reaching $51,000 (£34,200).
