New Jersey freeway to install cashless toll booths
9 Sep 2010

Cashless toll booths are set to be installed along a freeway in New Jersey, it has been revealed.

The South Jersey Transportation Authority (SJTA) has unveiled plans to replace traditional toll booths with a new electronic system on the Atlantic City Expressway.

Motorists can use E-ZPass technology to pay for their fee by fixing a reader on their windshield which communicates with the toll reader and deducts the required fare from the user's account.

Drivers will not be able to avoid tolls if they choose not to adopt E-ZPass as roadside cameras will photograph license plates and the SJTA will then send a bill in the mail.
Commuters could benefit from safer journeys as cars will no longer have to merge and swerve into a single lane to pay at a toll booth.

Officials claim the system will become fully operational by June 2011.

Cashless tolling is becoming increasingly prevalent in America, with roads in Texas, California and Colorado all adopting the technology.
