17 Dec 2010
A new long-lasting contactless smart card has been released by a digital security firm, it has been revealed.
L-1 Identity Solutions has launched its ExianSmart contactless identification card which is designed to last 15 years.
The ExianSmart card should last around five years longer than conventional smart cards, with the majority of cards currently expected to have a ten-year lifespan.
It set to be used in a variety of industries and could replace traditional driver's licenses, national and voter ID cards, as well as those which feature biometric data.
According to the firm, the new card is more flexible than the standard polycarbonate card.
Tests carried out by L-1 Identity Solutions have revealed that the polycarbonate cards broke 28 per cent faster than ExianSmart when bent at a seven degree angle.
Furthermore, where the two card types were bent repeatedly at a 25 degree angle, polycarbonate cards failed 95 per cent faster than ExianSmart hardware.
