New multi-purpose smart card set to be developed in Jordan
24 Dec 2010
A new multi-purpose smart card is set to be developed in Jordan, according to reports.
The Jordan Times has revealed that the government is set to begin looking for a technology firm who will create the cards, which will be used for a range of public services.
Marwan Juma, minister of information and communications technology, claimed the administration is eager to proceed with the project which will help cut costs and "speed up the provision of public services".
"The smart card will be used through stages. In the first stage, the card will be replace the ID and health insurance cards and more applications and functions will be added to it in the future," he told the news provider.
Although Mr Juma did not reveal the details of the scheme, it is widely expected that the new cards will be used across Jordan's transport network.
In 2008, Jordan's Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation received a $410,000 (£265,750) grant from the United States Trade Development Agency to help fund the project.
