New Namibian contactless smart card launched
9 Jun 2010
A new contactless smart card scheme has been introduced in Namibia which will allow tourists to make cashless payments.
The Tourism Smart Card, developed by Nampost Savings Bank, can be used to withdraw or deposit cash, as well as to pay for fuel, goods and accommodation.
Users will benefit from the speed of cashless payments, while holidaymakers will no longer have to carry around large amounts of money while abroad.
Security will also be improved, as the card uses biometric technology, rather than a PIN, to identify a customer.
The card cannot, therefore, be duplicated and any funds on lost or stolen cards can instantly be re-activated on a new card.
Cardholders can deposit funds into their Nampost account online or at any Nampost branch located across the country.
Once the card is no longer needed, users can close the account and transfer any remaining funds to their own bank account.
