New smart card terminals coming to India
11 Jan 2011
Around 480 new smart card terminals are set to be issued to the transport department in India, according to reports.
The Deccan Chronicle has revealed that, following the launch of smart card-based drivers' licences 18 months ago, transport officials will be able to verify motorist's identification quickly and easily with the new readers.
Speaking to the regional news provider, Hemanth Kumar, joint commissioner for transport, said: "The smart card drivers' licences contains all the information of a licence holder in a chip that is a part of the smart card technology.
"The hand-held terminals are very helpful for Regional Transport Offices for feeding information into a smart card drivers' license."
Mr Kumar added that the department already has around 20 readers and the remaining 480 terminals are expected to be delivered in January.
The smart cards contain an embedded chip which stores the cardholder's fingerprint and digital signature, as well as selected personal information
