New smart cards rolled out in China
6 Jan 2010
A new smart card scheme has been rolled out in Wuxi City in eastern Jiangsu Province, China.
Citing a report from Changjiang Daily, China.org.cn reported that the new smart cards contain biometric information including fingerprints and personal details.
The devices are used as healthcare cards and also store information about the holder's blood type, as well as their bank account and social security details.
People can use the cards to carry out a number of functions, including picking up their children from school or accessing buildings with an electronic security system.
Smart cards are tipped to improve the quality of education in Nigeria, the country's Guardian newspaper reported last month.
All Africa noted that the new contactless smart card product will allow students, their parents, teachers, management and administrative staff to easily access information at educational institutions.
