NFC mobile wallet trial an 'outstanding success'
15 Jun 2012

New Zealand has taken another step towards becoming a cashless society after a trial of near field communication-based mobile wallets proved to be an "outstanding success".

The collaborative trial organised by BNZ, Vodafone, Visa and Paymark over a four-month period in Auckland and Wellington allowed users to make contactless payments with a wave of their NFC-enabled mobile phone.

At the end of the pilot, 97 per cent of participants said they would be likely to use a mobile wallet when the service was launched and 95 per cent said they enjoyed not having to enter a pin for low-cost transactions.

Furthermore, the entire group of respondents were positive about their experience of the system and everyone said they would be likely to recommend it to a friend.

"People really enjoyed the ease of not having to carry around cards or cash to pay for such small amounts," commented Andy Symons, director of retail at BNZ.
