NZ skiers set to be issued with smart cards
18 Jan 2011

Skiers who visit a resort in New Zealand will be issued with smart card lift passes, it has been reported.

RFID World Canada has revealed that the new passes at Treble Cone skifield near Wanaka will feature radio frequency identification (RFID) technology.

This will allow holders of individual day, multi and season lift passes to quickly and easily pass through ticket barriers instead of having to get their tickets scanned by on-site staff.

It replaces the outdated system, which failed to scan ski lift passes during the first six months of the winter season.

The new cards also notify skiers and snowboarders the number of vertical metres they have travelled during their time on the slopes. It is set to be in installed during the summer season.

Earlier this year, a similar smart card system was installed at the Coronet Peak skifield in Queenstown, New Zealand, and has proved to be a success since its implementation.
