Polish bank set to issue contactless smart cards
8 Dec 2010
A Polish bank is set to issue contactless smart cards to its customers, it has been revealed.
Digital security firm Gemalto will oversee the upgrade of all current debit and credit cards supplied by PKO Bank Polski to the new contactless standard.
The bank has confirmed that its plans to develop around 6.5 million contactless cards for its customers by the end of 2011, making it the first bank in Poland to convert an entire card portfolio to the new technology.
Users will be able to use the hardware in a range of retailers including department stores, restaurants, cinemas, bookstores and pharmacies.
"For such a massive rollout, in such a short period of time, we needed a reliable partner with a proven track record in EMV contactless deployments and a strong presence in Poland," said Katarzyna Sosin, director of Center for credit cards and cards transactions at PKO Bank Polski.
"Spurred by the hefty challenge, the Gemalto team provided premium quality services which enable our migration program to unfold smoothly."
