26 Jul 2010

A new multi-functional contactless smart card has been launched in Slovenia, it has been revealed.

Visitors to the Slovenian capital city Ljubljana will be able to use the Urbana tourist card to pay for a host of goods and services, reports sloveniatimes.com

Cardholders can travel across the city's transport network, pay for tourist attractions such as the Ljubljana castle and zoo, as well as gain free internet access.

Vesna Paradiz, writing for the website, outlined some of the benefits of the new technology.

She said: "With the decision to upgrade the system, the method of payment has become quick and convenient.

"Significantly, it grants you the possibility of changing buses within 90 minutes of the payment of the first journey, at no additional change."

The city also has its own Urbana-branded cards for local residents, who can pay for travel, library services and parking fees with the cards.

Officials plan to roll out the regional scheme to the rest of Slovenia, allowing users to seamlessly travel across the country.
