Smart card ID system to be rolled out in Poland
15 Jan 2010

A contactless smart card identification system is set to be rolled out in Poland, which could pave the way for other European nations to follow suit, it has been suggested.

Help Net Security has reported that the national electronic ID program will be introduced in early 2011 and will be free of charge.

The cards will contain a digital photograph of its owner, as well as storing personal data, an electronic signature and possbily additional biometric data.

According to Frost and Sullivan Information and Communication Technologies Analyst, Yiru Zhong, although the roll-out will be comparatively small in contrast to European countries with bigger populations such as the UK or Italy, it could be significantly expanded to other nations in the continent.

The recent Government and ID Study from Frost and Sullivan highlighted that there is set to be a second wave of worldwide electronic ID system implementation.

A smart card identification system has recently been introduced in Wuxi City, China, which will store cardholder's social security details, blood type and personal details.
