Smart cards used in global car club scheme
9 Dec 2009
A new cashless and paperless system has been put into place by a global car sharing club.
The international service, Connect by Hertz, has recently expanded into Madrid, Spain and Berlin, Germany, in addition to its current locations in New York City, Paris and London.
Users of the flexible mobility scheme benefit from paperless technology and smart cards, which are enabled with a chip to provide them keyless entry to any car they reserve in the Hertz fleet.
The Connect by Hertz scheme allows members to book cars on a pay-as-you-go basis and can use the service in any city that offers the programme. Their smart card can be used to unlock the vehicle they reserve via the programme, regardless of where they are in the world.
Transport for London recently identified smart cards as a good way for international visitors to the capital to save money and time when using public transit in the city.
People from overseas who are planning a trip to London can now order their Oyster smart card in advance online before they travel to England - allowing them to beat the queues when they arrive.
