South Africa to debut contactless payments 'ahead of World Cup'
12 Jan 2010

Contactless payment technology is set to be deployed in taxis in a number of South African cities ahead of the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

VeriFone Holdings announced this week (January 7th) that it has signed a licensing agreement with iMobilise Transportation Systems which will see the systems installed in 1,500 taxis in Durban, Cape Town and Johannesburg in time for the summer event.

It is expected that deployment will begin in the spring. The technology will allow passengers to choose from a variety of payment options, including contactless, chip and pin debit cards and credit cards.

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is set to take place from June 11th to July 11th across ten venues in a total of nine host cities.

Nelspruit, Polokwane and Rustenburg are among some of the other cities hosting matches during the month-long event.

In the UK, contactless smart cards from sQuid can help people travelling on Arriva buses in Bolton, Greater Manchester, pay for their tickets without the need for cash, with taxi payments due to follow later in the year.
