SPA members welcome arrival of Austria Card

The members of the Smart Payment Association (SPA) have welcomed the new arrival to the organisation, Austria Card.

Finextra.com reports president of the SPA Dr Andreas Strobel as saying that the group will benefit from the latest addition.

The SPA promotes and facilitates the use of smart cards as a global payment method and having more members will make them a stronger collaboration.

Dr Strobel said: "The new member will strengthen our efforts in negotiating framework terms and conditions with the leading international payment schemes, creating advantages for the whole industry."

Austria Card has a "strong foothold" in eastern Europe, which he suggested would also be beneficial.

Four of the leading industry players in the smart card payment segment - Gemalto, Gieseck & Devrient, Oberthur Technologies and Sagem Orga - help make up the SPA.

Together they aim to develop the industry and add value to financial institutions.
