Springbok fans offered tap and go contactless smart card
22 Jun 2012
A major bank in South Africa is launching a trial of its new contactless smart card that will enable national rugby fans to make tap and go payments when watching the Springboks.
Absa, which is part of the Barclays group and is the largest bank in South Africa, already operates a large contactless payments network, but the latest addition will expand the system for rugby fans watching games at its Absa Boktown venues.
As well as allowing users to make quick and easy contactless payments, the smart card will also be compatible with all MasterCard PayPass terminals, meaning it can be used to make eMoney payments at more than 1,000 locations across the country.
Arrie Rautenbach, head of retail markets at Absa, said that the new arrangement builds on the bank's sponsorship deal to make the everyday lives of its customers easier.
"Our venture into Boktown venues will allow us to create further consumer awareness of this stress-free and time-saving way to pay," he added.
