Tulane University to introduce contactless smart cards
15 Apr 2010
Tulane University is in the process of distributing contactless smart cards to its students.
The New Orleans institution is to use the technology for identification and contactless payment purposes.
Technology being used mirrors that in use by organisations such as sQuid to facilitate transit payment, low value contactless retail transaction and cashless catering in parts of the UK.
A report in the university's newspaper, the Tulane Hullabaloo, investigated what impact the use of the technology is likely to have for students' lives.
Previously students were supplied with cards using their social security numbers, which created the potential threat of identity theft.
Contactless smart cards should provide a much safer way of ensuring identity verification is possible as well as opening up myriad other possibilities.
It is hoped that the card will be in use for payment in the university's eateries by autumn.
Similar schemes run in school or university cafeterias in the UK by the likes of sQuid, an ePayments facilitator, have seen reduced queues and faster service.
It is hoped that a similar effect will be realised for Tulane students.
