US Navy embraces e-money solutions
20 Oct 2010

The US Navy is fully embracing e-money solutions after it was revealed cash levels aboard ships have reduced significantly over the past nine years.

In 2001, the Navy began issuing personnel with a Navy Cash card which could be used to pay for toiletries, foods and other goods at the ships store, as well as vending machines.

Since its launch, the 154 ships which are taking part in the project are carrying 75 per cent less cash on average, according to Navy Captain George DeVries, commander of Naval Supplies System Command.

The cards eliminate the need for cardholders to pay in their wages at the bank as they can be automatically loaded onto the card.

Graham Mackenzie, a spokesman for Navy Cash, revealed the card benefits both personnel and administrative officers.

He told Federal News Radio: "Last year alone we displaced 80 million quarters that would otherwise have to be carried by personnel, transported, counted and stored and all that kind of stuff.

"So there's an administrative workload associated with that."
