US Salvation Army volunteers to accept e-money donations
23 Nov 2010
Salvation Army volunteers in the US will be accepting e-money donations this Christmas, it has been revealed.
Staff carrying the traditional red kettles around the country's streets will now also bring mobile credit card readers so consumers can donate funds to the charity even if they don't have cash.
Residents in Hawaii, Georgia, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Kentucky and North Carolina will all be able to use the new payment system, which was first piloted in 2008.
A statement from the organisation said: "In a practice that is becoming mainstream for the Salvation Army, many local offices are creating cashless kettles - traditional kettles with an attached credit card reader allowing supporters to continue to give even when they don't have cash on hand. Transactions are safe and secure."
The not-for-profit organisation has also released an iPhone application to allow mobile phone users to make donations.
Last year, the Salvation Army raised a record $139 million (£86.6 million) in the US through its red kettle campaign.
