US town launches new loyalty card scheme
12 Oct 2010
A US town has launched a new loyalty card scheme which aims to encourage residents to shop in local stores.
Brookline in Massachusetts has introduced the PXT Payments smart debit card which can be used in a range of participating retailers and restaurants.
The cards will effectively create a local currency, with cardholders also able to pay for their parking fee at store car parks.
Dana Brigham, the co-owner and manager of independent bookstore Brookline Booksmith, expressed her delight at the new initiative.
She said: "If there's anything that will bring customers into the store and make them have a good experience we're all for it.
"If people can get parking easily, and come in with the same card to shop, I think it will enhance their experience."
Officials in the neighbouring regions of Boston, Newton, and Wellesley are reported to be monitoring the progress of the scheme before launching their own programme.
