US university expands eMoney solutions scheme
16 Sep 2010
A US university has expanded its cashless payment programme, it has been revealed.
Tufts University in Massachusetts has introduced its JumboCash scheme to 11 new retailers across the local area, reports The Tufts Daily.
A total of 18 restaurants and stores now accept the pre-paid smart cards, which allows students to pay for goods and services on and off-campus without the need for cash.
Patti Klos, director of dining and business services at the university, revealed that the institution was able to expand the programme after upgrading its payment technology.
She said: "In order for them [retailers] to get paid they had to bring the receipts and we would sort through them.
"Because it was a manual process and we have limited staff, we set the number of restaurants at seven. That’s about all we could handle."
Ms Klos added that the new transaction technology quickens the payment process as paper receipts are no longer required by retailers.
