Irish integrated transit card system to be launched next year
1 Sep 2010

The proposed integrated transit card system is set to be operational in the early part of next year, it has been revealed.

The latest timetable for the 55 million euro (£45 million) project shows that the new smart cards will initially be operational on Luas and Dublin Bus services, reports irishtimes.com.

Passengers using Irish Rail, private bus operators and Bus Eireann will all be able to use the cards to travel across the country by the end of the year.

Annual ticket holders will be the first consumers to apply for the new cards, with the system then opened up to monthly tickets and pay-as-you-go customers.

Tim Gaston of the Integrated Ticketing Project Office cited similar systems in London, Paris and Belfast which had also been introduced in stages.

He told the news provider: "It is taking longer to get to the final delivery day than we had all hoped, but good progress has been made."
