June 30th last day for cheque guarantee cards
4 Jul 2011
The last day for cheque guarantee cards - where slips are honoured by banks even if account funds are insufficient - was on June 30th.
Although people can still write out cheques for at least a further seven years, this could help pave the way for eMoney to become a more typical form of payment.
Many cards now only come with a debit function, with the guarantee only working if the writer of the cheque handed it over in person, with the card number on the back.
Those who still make use of cheques have now been advised to carry on doing this, with Sandra Quinn of the Payments Council telling the BBC: "You can still write and use cheques in the same way that you always have done - just not guaranteed by a card."
This comes after Visa Europe predicted that the number of contactless payment cards in use in the UK would reach 20 million by the end of the year.
