LA sees benefits of e-money parking meters
18 Oct 2010

Emoney smart card readers have proved to be a huge success in Los Angeles, it has been revealed.

During September, motorists in the city purchased around $250,000 (£155,000) worth of parking tickets at the city's 10,000 new Coin & Card meters.

The new solar-powered meters allow users to pay for their parking fee with a debit or credit card, as well as cash, with transport officials claiming they function "99 per cent" of the time.

The success of the scheme has led the Los Angeles Department of Transportation to estimate that the meters will generate between $1 million and $1.5 million a year.

"A modern city needs modern technology," council member Tom LaBonge told LAist. "These smart meters will allow people to park with greater ease and pay with a swipe of the card."

It is reported that some of the remaining 30,000 traditional cash meters will also be upgraded to accept cashless transactions.
