Firms advised to upgrade loyalty card schemes
22 Jul 2010

Firms should consider updating their loyalty schemes to include smart card technology, it has been claimed.

Christopher Malgorn, writing for identity security firm hidglobal.com, claimed both businesses and consumers can benefit from the new technology.

Customers can accrue loyalty points quickly and securely by simply swiping their contactless card in-store.

Retailers on the other hand can record key information on shoppers purchasing behaviours and spending patterns. Firms can then adapt their business to meet customer's requirements.

Mr Malgorn expressed his belief that companies need to constantly update their technology in order to maintain its customer base.

He wrote on the website: "Smart card-based schemes are thus well placed to support retailers in keeping their customers satisfied, engaged and attracting the next wave of loyal customers."

A recent report by Subway revealed that there are currently £5.2 billion worth of unused loyalty card points in the UK.
