New loyalty scheme aims to attract Worcestershire shoppers during bridge closure
9 Jan 2012
A new loyalty scheme has been launched in a Worcestershire town in order to attract shoppers to the area while a nearby bridge is closed.
The Teme Bridge in Tenbury Wells is currently closed for ten weeks as workers carry out essential maintenance, closing off the main route into the town for many consumers who live on the other side of the River Teme.
With the next nearest bridge at Little Hereford three miles upstream, many retailers in the area are concerned that the works will result in a loss of revenue as shoppers turn elsewhere.
In a bid to stop the works having a negative effect on sales, BBC News has reported that local stores are now offering shoppers in Tenbury Wells the chance win iPads and prizes of £1,000 in a lottery-style competition.
Sadie Chalkley, president of the Tenbury Wells Chamber of Trade, told the news provider that the programme would be "very helpful" to local businesses.
"Our experience shows that in the past when this has happened with roadworks people go elsewhere to shop because there are lots of small towns not so far away, and only a percentage of them come back afterwards," she said.
Worcestershire County Council and Malvern Hills District Council have given £50,000 to local retailers to help cover for the loss of trade while the bridge is shut.
