NFC 'to boost coupon industry'
24 Oct 2011
The emergence of near field communication (NFC) technology will have a major impact on the coupon industry, it has been suggested.
According to research conducted by Coupons.com, six-times as many shoppers would rather utilise digital vouchers than paper-based alternatives, SecondAct.com reports.
Now, co-founder of CouponTrade.com Brad Wasz believes that NFC will make it even easier for retailers to advertise promotions.
He stated that people who "check-in" to an establishment using their smartphone could be alerted to special deals that are available in that particular store.
"The classic example is that of two friends near a coffee shop. The shop could, in theory, alert the friends of their presence and invite them to enjoy a two-for-one coupon," he was reported as saying.
A number of digital reward schemes are already being utilised and Marketing Week reported earlier this week that Starbucks could be about to launch its My Rewards initiative in the UK, after it proved to be successful in Canada and the US.
