Readers urged to support independent bookshops with loyalty scheme
4 Oct 2011
A new loyalty scheme has been launched that is designed to stop the decline of independent bookshops in the UK.
The Independent Alliance has created Love Your Indie in association with the Guardian and the Observer and already has 114 member shops signed up, the Bookseller reports.
Readers collect their loyalty card - either from the newspaper or from participating stores - and then receive credit for every £10 they spend at their local independent bookshop.
Once they have done this ten times, shoppers will be able to choose free books from a list of specially-selected titles. They can also get 20 per cent off their first purchase using the card.
Vivian Archer, one of the participants, said: "The card is exactly what the independent sector needs to drive people into our shops and remind them why nothing beats the brilliant service, lovingly selected range and ambience that only independent booksellers can provide."
According to new figures from The Booksellers Association, the number of independent bookshops in the UK has fallen by a quarter since 2006.
