Technology 'has changed the local high street'
26 Oct 2009

Ever-changing technology, new consumer habits and the onset of the recession have affected the way a town's high street functions, compared to previous years.

That is the opinion of Colchester shopkeeper Dave Williams, who - along with the other members of his community - is anticipating the launch of a newloyalty scheme in the town.

Colchester's Daily Gazette newspaper reports that shoppers and businesses in the Essex town will soon be able to benefit from a loyalty programme that will see residents buy cards that can be used to get discounts in a variety of local retail outlets.

"We believe our buy local scheme will prove popular and cost-effective if it is given the support it needs," Mr Williams, who works at Jacks Famous Supplies, explained.

He added that expanding technology and other issues that the high street has to deal with does not have to mean that "the local independent retailer is a thing of the past".

Popular high street chain Coffee Republic uses a loyalty scheme to encourage customers to make a return visit.

Run by eMoney network sQuidcard, the loyalty marketing programme allows members to earn ten per cent on all their purchases at the coffee shop.
