Tesco to launch loyalty scheme in US
19 Jul 2011

Supermarket giant Tesco is set to launch a loyalty scheme for customers in the US with the hope of combating low sales at its Fresh & Easy chain.

Announcing the news on Monday (July 18th), the world's third biggest retailer announced plans to introduce the initiative across seven California stores this autumn.

News of the Friends of Fresh and Easy card comes after the company reported £186 million losses during the year ending in February.

However, the retailer expressed optimism that the programme could put an end to the difficult period, with plans to launch the scheme across the entire chain by next year, the Financial Times reports.

MF Global Analyst and critic of the store Mike Dennis claimed the introduction of a loyalty card could confuse customers "who are meant to believe Fresh & Easy is already price competitive".

Earlier this month, Tesco announced plans to open a new £30 million training academy in Asia, which will offer employment opportunities to 24,000 members of staff.
