Macao casinos order casino eMoney chips
6 July 2009
A different kind of eMoney has recently been the focus of attention in the Macao region of China, it has been revealed.
Dr Peter Harrop, chair of RFID industry analyst IDTechEx, reports that the administrative region - which recently overtook Las Vegas as the world's most active casino zone - has ordered $8 million (£4.9 million) worth of RFID-enabled casino chips.
The inclusion of RFID technology on the chips allows them to be counted automatically at casino tables, ensuring high-stake games are played accurately.
It is the same technology used to power sQuid contactless smart cards, a more conventional form of eMoneywhich can be used on transit systems and in some food outlets in the UK.
Dr Harrop adds that China is among the largest users of RFID technology, along with the UK and the US.
Other innovative applications of RFID in the Far East include its installation on fast fishing boats, which the report explains helps to avoid collisions but is not a purpose for which the technology has been used in the West.
