Multiple functions make contactless smart cards an attractive proposition for businesses.
25 Mar 2011
Smart cards and contactless smart cards are transforming business security, thanks to the expanded capabilities they offer for ID verification.
According to Security Info Watch, smart credentials are the future for all organisations because they offer firms a way to consolidate a number of applications and services, all on one card.
Writing on the site, Jennifer Toscano, portfolio marketing manager for credentials, readers, software and controls at Ingersoll Rand Security Technologies, said this not only allows for increased efficiency, but also helps reduce administration costs.
"By combining the openness and security of open system contactless smart credentials with a myriad of applications, organizations can provide staff with more contactless functions without having to perform the software and interface tweaks so prevalent with proprietary credentials," she said.
Ms Toscano recommended that people look for contactless smart cards that boast mutual authentication and are encrypted with AES 128-bit diversified keys.
"With such capabilities, the card and ready verify that they are authorised to communicate bi-directionally."
She was speaking after Dick Clark, director of Smart Media Innovations, said that contactless smart cards are also transforming safety management and helping building managers to ensure staff are easily accounted for following breakouts of fire.
