New vending machines in Japan to interact with users
21 Nov 2011

New vending machines pioneered in Japan this month will be able to interact with people who use near field communications to pay for goods from them.

Almost a million of the new designs are being rolled out, which allow customers to pair up with them on their smartphone and scan QR codes they receive.

The more a person uses the machines, the more friendly they get, even displaying birthday greetings and rewards such as phone avatars and weather reports.

It is hoped that people will collect the rewards they receive and enter into competitions with their friends over badges.

The technology could be brought in worldwide if it is successful.

Meanwhile, according to the Sri Lankan Daily News, the first instant hot and cold tea vending machine has been developed in the country. Users text their nearest machine, which pours their drink ready.

They can then pay for it using eMoney upon collection.
