New York bridge increases e-money toll lanes
6 Oct 2010
A New York bridge is set to go completely cashless by 2012 as the local transport authority expands its current range of e-money toll lanes.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) has confirmed that lanes on the Henry Hudson Bridge which currently accept electronic money will not take cash from January 2011.
This will reduce the number of cash lanes from six to four, while a total of ten lanes will accept E-ZPass – the technology which deducts the required toll fare from a driver's account.
In 2012, all of the toll booths will be removed from the bridge, allowing EZ Pass holders to drive along the road without stopping.
James Ferrara, president of the MTA's Bridges and Tunnels division, claimed the body are looking to speed up traffic in the area.
"We can [only] move 600 to 800 vehicles an hour with gates. This is not high-speed tolling. Presumably, we will move traffic faster without [toll booths]," he told nypost.com.
