NFC technology 'heralding new era for transactions'

The advent of near field communication (NFC) technology is ushering in a "new era" for convenient and secure payments, according to an expert.

Dr Tam Hulusi, senior vice president for secure technology company HID Global, told SourceSecurity.com that NFC innovations could lead to a major shift in the way consumers operate.

As well as being able to make easy transactions, the technology is helping to introduce a new model for identification, eliminating the need for people to carry other credentials and making it easy to utilise multiple services.

Dr Hulusi observed, for example, that users can gain "secure facility access and the ability to make cashless payments at the facility's canteen" using the same device.

According to the expert, it is therefore vital that a simple but secure method of identity delivery and protection are created that can ensure NFC technology can meet its potential.

Last month, a report from Marketing Week suggested that the growth of NFC devices means companies will be able to conduct location-based advertising campaigns more easily.
