NHS workers to be warned over smart card sharing
8 Mar 2011
National Health Service (NHS) workers could be set to face strict new rules governing the use of smart cards, it has been reported.
At present, a range of workers in the public sector body are able to benefit from smart card technology, including GPs and community nurses.
However, following on from the revelation that around one in 20 family doctors regularly share their cards with colleagues, the National Information Governance Board (NIGB) has issued a new paper outlining its plans to clamp down on workers who break the rules and allow others to use their smart cards, the medical sector publication Pulse has reported.
More specifically, it is hoped that officials will agree to plans to ensure that NHS workers who break smart card sharing rules are subjected to the same punishment as those in the nation's police forces.
Just last month, a pair of US senators from the state of Georgia unveiled their plans to give special smart cards to patients in order to ensure that they benefit from a 'joined-up' health service.
