7 Oct 2010

The Cross River State of Nigeria has become the first African state to introduce an e-money card which also incorporates biometric identification technology.

The Smartcity card, which has been developed by Precise Biometrics, will eventually be issued to all three million citizens in the region.

Cardholders will be able to use the technology to prove their identity for a range of public services such as tax declaration, healthcare, social benefits and pension claims.

Furthermore, the Smartcity card can be used to pay for goods and services in a range of participating retailers.

The emoney payment platform which is used for the card is also prevalent in 26 of Nigeria's 36 states as part of the state-backed SmartGov Initiative.

Liyel Imoke, the governor of the Cross River State , said: "One of the advantages of e-payment is to create efficiency within the public sector while providing good service delivery to the people."
