O2 Arena brings in contactless payment technology
28 Nov 2011

Contactless payment technology is to be brought in at the O2 Arena in a bid to reduce queuing and make services more convenient for visitors.

Visa and Barclaycard have teamed up to install 250 payment terminals across the venue, which can be used to pay for goods and services to the value of £15 via mobile phones and contactless smart cards.

On event nights, the companies found three-quarters of transactions are for less than this amount, so buying drinks and snacks should be significantly speeded up.

Richard Armstong, head of payment acceptance at Barclaycard, said: "We're confident that contactless technology will prove popular with visitors to the O2 Arena."

Last month, the band Jamiroquai announced it would be using near field communication to engage with fans at future gigs, bringing in "smart posters" that will be put up around concert venues.

They can then be scanned with smartphones to provide bonus content for users.
