Olympic tickets 'to double as eCash and transit cards'
5 Jul 2009

London 2012 Olympic Games tickets could double as eCash and transit cards, it has been revealed.

The Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology explains that the sporting event is an opportunity to unify a number of different services into a single document.

"For example, it is hoped that spectators will be issued with electronic tickets integrated with a cash card and the London Oyster travel pass," the Office states.

By doing so, the body adds that the Olympics could become a showcase event for the technologies behind eCash and transit cards.

The Office foresees other areas where technological challenges will be faced, including communications and event security.

According to the London 2012 website, the tickets will also double as fee-free transit cards on the day of the event to which they provide access.

Bearers will be able to use London public transport without charge on the specific date on their tickets, which are due to go on sale in 2011
