Over one billion e-money smart cards expected to be shipped in 2011
10 Dec 2010

Over one billion e-money smart cards are expected to be shipped in 2011, according to new research.

The Smart Security Industry, a digital security organisation, has revealed that the technology is predicted to become more popular over the next 12 months as more banks begin to adopt smart cards, especially those in Latin America and Asia.

The report also shows that more cards will be contactless-enabled, while dual-card hardware, which combines both contact and contactless technology, is set to grow at an even faster rate.

Overall, a total of 5.3 billion smart secure devices are predicted to be shipped during 2010, an increase of 18 per cent compared to last year.

The report claimed that more devices are expected to communicate with one another independent of human intervention in the future and vendors should respond accordingly.

It said: "To make the best of these opportunities, the right balance between convenience, privacy and security must be found."
