Pupils resist move from eCash cards
13 Jul 2009
Birmingham pupils are resisting their school's attempt to move from eCash to fingerprint recognition for its cashless catering systems.
The Birmingham Post reports the objections of around 20 sixth-formers at King Edward VI Five Ways School in Bartley Green.
Cashless catering has previously been conducted at the school using eCash smart cards.
However, the school has planned to move to fingerprint recognition, which requires biometric information about pupils to be kept on file.
An open letter from pupils at the school reads: "About 15 to 20 sixth-formers are refusing to have anything to do with it; we don't want our prints taken."
The letter - published on social networking site Facebook and reported by the Birmingham Post - highlights the security issues associated with some cashless catering standards which are avoided when eMoney smart cards are issued.
With the sQuidcard, misplaced cards are also not a security problem as they can be cancelled and the outstanding balance transferred to a replacement.
