Recession 'encourages' contactless smart card adoption
9 Jul 2010

The recession has encouraged firms to adopt contactless smart card schemes, it has been claimed.

Stuart Neal, head of UK payment acceptance at Barclaycard, claims firms can steal a march on their rivals by offering the technology, reports internetretailing.net.

He told the website: "Far from delaying the uptake of contactless, the recession has provided an added impetus for retailers to be innovative and offer improved customer service."

Mr Neal added that there were numerous advantages to both consumers and companies who deploy contactless payment solutions.

Customers can benefit from shorter queuing times as transactions take less time to process, while more convenient payment methods are shown to increase the average spend per customer.

Retailers who offer customers the chance to pay with the cards could also record higher sales as a result of an increase in customer numbers.

UK company Boots recently trialled contactless payment options across selected stores.
