RFID 'to prevent fraud' in a cashless society
9 Jul 2009
The cashless society of the future could be fraud-free thanks to the technology embedded in sQuid's contactless smart cards.
RFID - which stands for Radio Frequency Identification - allows sQuid's contactless smart cards to carry out transactions without needing to be physically inserted into a card reader.
ZDNet UK reports plans from mobile phone manufacturer Ericsson to incorporate RFID technology into handsets in order to combat card fraud.
The publication reports that Hakan Djuphammar, vice-president of systems architecture, told the company's Business Innovation Forum of the benefits made possible by RFID's geolocational abilities.
"If the phone is close to where the card is used, the fraud risk is low," he explained.
"But if the phone suddenly moves away from where the card is used, the issuer can be alerted to check that particular transaction."
He added that the ability to geolocate a cardholder and a transaction is of particular interest to card issuers in countries with high levels of fraud.
The Business Innovation Forum also addressed issues of how mobile broadband could expand in the future to change the way people connect to the internet at work and in the home.
