Smart card sector 'to expand in 2010'
20 Nov 2009
In spite of the current economic downturn, the smart card sector is anticipated to grow next year, according to predictions from Eurosmart.
EE Times reported that the Brussels-based international non-profit organisation is expecting growth of nearly ten per cent in the number of microprocessor smart cards sold and shipped next year.
It also forecast that in addition to smart cards and key fobs used for transport, payment and government identification, growth is expected in mobile payments and mobile mass transit services.
Eurosmart identified security as an area of continued priority in the coming year, pointing out that the number of smart secure devices increased by 5.1 per cent between 2008 and 2009.
Last month, a new paper from the Smart Card Alliance in the US asserted that contactless smart cards could be a "vital" way of preventing payment fraud.
Randy Vanderhoof, executive director of the alliance, commented in October that contactless technology could be one of the keys to slowing the rate of financial crime.
