Smart card shipments increase in 2010
15 Sep 2011

High numbers of smart card shipments in 2010 have spurred industry experts to predict a positive future for the emerging industry in the coming years.

New data from IMS Research revealed that deliveries of the devices increased by 19 per cent during the 12-month period compared to 2009, with the smart card IC market growing by 20 per cent.

The findings highlight significant progress within the industry, which suffered a blow during the recession after shipments increased by just five per cent in 2009.

Report author Alex Green suggested that the high growth rate compared favourably with the long-term trends emerging in the market in recent years.

"Although the market is not forecast to drop back down to the lows seen in 2009 and 2002 … it will struggle to stay at the 20 per cent level," the analyst revealed.

This news comes after a recent report published by IMS Research revealed that the international professional mobile radio market increased 15 per cent in terms of volumes in 2010.
