Smart card travel mooted for York taxis
11 Aug 2009

Taxis in York could soon allow their customers to benefit from a smart card travel service in the city.

According to local newspaper the Press, the initiative would allow vulnerable people in the region to use a cashless card system in place of transport tokens.

If the plans get the go-ahead, it would be another step towards a cashless society.

Indeed, in a similar vein, residents in Bolton, Greater Manchester will soon be able to pay for bus travel in the region by using the sQuid eMoney network.

Explaining the taxi system in York, the council's executive member for city strategy Steve Galloway told the newspaper that other cities in the UK have used smart card travel in taxis successfully.

"The taxi card would be a fully auditable direct replacement for transport tokens. Each eligible claimant would be given a smartcard with a set value to be used against the cost of taxi travel in the York area," he added.
