Southampton makes use of contactless smart cards
7 Nov 2011

Southampton has been found to be making good use of contactless smart cards, resulting in it being named the UK's smartest city.

According to a new poll, the city council has modernised more services with the technology than any other authority in Britain, Ecebs found.

Residents of Southampton can now use smart cards to take books out of the library, prove their age, access the leisure centres and even register for organ donation, the Daily Echo reports.

There are also plans to introduce more cashless catering programmes in schools and to allow motorists to pay for bridge tolls using eMoney.

"Southampton City Council should be applauded for its efforts in modernising local services," said David Burdett of Ecebs.

Aberdeen City Council was named as the smartest in Scotland.

Another local authority that is benefiting from the use of contactless smart cards is Bolton Council, which paired up with sQuid in 2007 to provide services including discounts for students.
