Southend considers eMoney parking meters
2 Jul 2010
Southend Council is considering introducing a new range of eMoney parking meters, it has been revealed.
Motorists would be able to pay for their parking fees with their mobile phone, eliminating the need for loose change, reports echonews.co.uk.
Drivers simply register their details with the council before alerting officials of their location in order to make cashless payments.
The technology could make it easier for shoppers to top up their parking time as they would not have to return to their car to add more credit.
Furthermore, the decreased use of cash could mean that parking attendants empty meters less regularly.
Derek Kenyon, parking manager at Southend Council, claimed the council wanted to build on its existing cashless payment schemes in seafront car parks.
He told the news provider: "We are investigating the feasibility of introducing cashless mobile phone activated parking in Southend."
The scheme is already running in Westminster, while similar operations are running across other areas of London.
