Alberta town plans smart cards for transit systems
20 Jul 2009
A town in northern Canada is planning to introduce a new smart card which could be used to pay for itstransit systems and a number of other amenities.
The Daily Herald Tribune reported that Grande Prairie, Alberta, is planning to link its new public transport smart card with several other community organisations, including its library and leisure centre.
"It's basically similar to a debit card, where you load it in and load it up [on] the computer, put maybe C$20 (£11) on it and swipe it each time," said the town's transit coordinator Audra McKinley, speaking after the launch of Grande Prairie's Transit Master Plan, which was published earlier this week.
Earlier this month, Lord Andrew Adonis announced plans in the UK to boost smart card travel, stating the technology is ideal for travellers who need to switch between different transit systems on a single journey.
Travellers in Greater Manchester will soon be able to use sQuid eMoney smart cards to pay for bus travel in the area.
