Auckland to have eMoney travel ticket system by 2011
8 Dec 2009

People travelling to the 2011 Rugby World Cup are set to encounter a contactless smart card system when travelling around Auckland, one of the tournament venues.

This comes after the Auckland Regional Transport Authority (Arta) announced that a contract has been signed to deliver a super transport ticket for the city.

Global technology firm Thales, the New Zealand Transport Agency and the Auckland Regional Council (Arc) are all involved in the development of the eMoney scheme.

Local people and visitors will be able to access the technology ahead of the showpiece sporting event which will get underway in New Zealand during September 2011.

Arc Chairman Mike Lee explained that the set-up will provide "seamless movement" between buses, ferries and trains. He also suggested that the contactless smart cards will make public transport a more attractive proposition for the people of Auckland.

Rabin Rabindran, Chairman of Arta, described the plans as "history in the making for Auckland and New Zealand".

London Mayor Boris Johnson recently revealed that - from January 2nd - Londoners will be able to use their Oyster cards on underground and over-ground trains, as well as bus and river services.
